HUD awards $355M to local homeless programs

On Monday the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded $355 million to more than 1,200 local homeless housing and service programs across the United States.

"We know how to end homelessness and these grants support local programs that are proven to prevent and end homelessness as we've come to know it," said Secretary Castro.

  • The enforcement of fair housing laws and policies.
  • Educating the public, housing providers, and local governments about their rights and responsibilities under the Fair Housing Act.

housing trust fund to help increase, preserve affordable housing
Our nation is experiencing an affordable housing crisis. In many places, there is not enough affordable housing available to move people out of homelessness and into permanent housing.

For the first time ever, HUD is allocating $174 million through the nation’s new Housing Trust Fund to increase and preserve the supply of affordable rental housing for extremely low- and very low-income households, including families experiencing homelessness.
